What You'll Be DoingWake County's Watershed Management Program has a great opportunity to learn and grow with a division that will give you new challenges and opportunities to engage in continued professional improvements.
The Principal Environmental Engineer leads the implementation of Quality Assurance/Quality Control (QA/QC) in one or more sections of the Watershed Management program, serving as one of the programs key subject matter experts, offering second opinions, mentoring environmental engineers/consultants, and offering consultations on complex projects or areas of emerging concern to proffer solutions. This position reviews plans, creates permits, occasionally inspects for projects compliance and consults closely with Wake County's municipal partners. The individual in this position will apply the ordinances, regulations, stormwater management and erosion control design engineering principles and practices, and accounting tools to ensure consistent, accurate, and timely plan review, permitting and enforcement.
About Our TeamThe Wake County Environmental Services Division of Water Quality educates the public, issues environmental permits, enforces environmental rules and regulations to protect soil and water resources; and leads initiatives on water and environmental sustainability throughout the County. The Division functions at a nationally recognized level and accomplishes its tasks through robust and customer-centric programs in watershed management and water resources.
The Basics (Required Education and Experience) - Bachelor's degree in Engineering
- Four years of experience in environmental health, environmental planning, inspections or engineering
- North Carolina Professional Engineer’s (PE) License upon hire or the ability to obtain through comity
- Valid Driver's License and "safe" driving record
- Equivalent education and experience are accepted

Beyond the Basics (Preferred Education and Experience) - Masters degree in Civil Engineering or related discipline
- Certified Floodplain Manager (CFM)
- Certified Professional in Erosion & Sediment Control (CPESC)
- Certified Professional in Stormwater Quality (CPSWQ)
- Five years of experience as a Civil/Environmental Engineer applying engineering principles to sedimentation & erosion control, stormwater management, and plan review
How Will We Know You're 'The One'? - Strong knowledge of rules, design principles and methods to control sedimentation and erosion and mitigate stormwater runoff.
- Ability to evaluate projects of peers, identify possible technical deficiencies among staff or areas of emerging concern and provide appropriate training materials/resources.
- Excellent ability to communicate effectively in written and oral formats to explain technical specifications and negotiate with stakeholders.
- Excellent ability to identify measures or indicators of system performance and the actions needed to improve or correct performance, to maintain high-quality and competitive core services.
- Knowledge of Green Stormwater Infrastructure principles and applications, and ability to advance innovative stormwater management and nature-based solutions with stakeholders.
