The Office of the Agricultural Commissioner/Sealer of Weights and Measures works cooperatively with local, state and federal agencies in the enforcement of laws and regulations promoting consumer, marketplace, agricultural and environmental protection.

The mission of the Agriculture Department is to promote and protect the agricultural industry and to protect public health and the environment. The Agricultural Commissioner enforces laws and regulations that assure the continuity of agricultural trade and commerce. The Sealer of Weights and Measures enforces laws and regulations associated with transactions involving a count, weight or measure to ensure fair trade and equity in the marketplace.

The Position
The Assistant Agricultural Commissioner/Sealer of Weights & Measures assists the Agricultural Commissioner/Sealer in managing and directing a group of assigned staff and operational and administrative functions within the Agriculture/Weights and Measures Department. This is an assistant department director level position, responsible for assisting in the planning, coordination and administration of departmental operations. The employee in this position assists in establishing and administering operational policies, goals and procedures and in developing and administering the department budget. Responsibilities of this position demand thorough knowledge of and expertise in executing programs within state legal requirements, county ordinances, policies, and procedural guidelines that benefit the consumer, the environment, public safety, and the agricultural industry.

Position Requirements
Experience: Five (5) years of increasingly responsible experience in agricultural and weights and measures inspection and regulatory enforcement with at least two years of experience equivalent to a Deputy Agricultural Commissioner/Sealer of Weights and Measures in Solano County. AND

Education/Training: A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university; with major in agriculture, biological sciences, physical sciences, or a related field.

LICENSING, CERTIFICATION AND REGISTRATION REQUIREMENTS:

This position is an “at-will” position and is exempt from the civil service; incumbents serve at the discretion of the appointing authority.

Ideal Candidate Statement
The ideal Assistant Agricultural Commissioner/Sealer of Weights and Measures candidate will possess diverse experience working in and managing agricultural, pesticide use enforcement, and weights and measures programs including establishing, executing and achieving defined performance objectives for individuals and program areas. The Assistant Commissioner must apply and build on such experience to effectively lead and align multiple program managers and administrative staff in a common mission of providing exceptional customer service and agricultural, environmental, consumer and marketplace protections. To further facilitate and ensure fulfillment of this mission, the Assistant Commissioner must be a dependable self-starter able to work collaboratively with other County departments, local, state and federal agencies and other stakeholders.
