Description
DescriptionThe Elections Division of the County Clerk-Recorder's Office conducts elections as required by law. The Elections Division conducts all Federal, State, County, School and Special District elections in the county, as well as general municipal elections for all 10 Ventura County cities. In anticipation of the November 4, 2025, Special Election, the Elections Division is seeking to fill
110 TEMPORARY EXTRA HELP positions to perform a variety of ballot processing, customer service and data entry functions in support of the election. Depending upon job assignment, terms of employment may range from several days to several weeks.
Extra help employees are hired to perform temporary work and are paid on an hourly basis. They work on call, which means that their work hours may vary from day to day, and they may need to work various shifts, on evenings and weekends. Hours are driven by the Elections Division workload and may be less than 8 hours/day.
Extra Help employees are not regular county employees and are not eligible for county benefits. Additionally, Extra Help employees are limited to working a maximum of 1,040 hours per fiscal year (July 1 - June 30).
Ideal candidates will be willing and able to:
- Work flexible hours including time frames which may be short in duration, may include overtime, evening, and weekend work on short notice;
- Perform routine and repetitive tasks which may include sitting for long periods of time;
- Maintain attention to detail in a fast paced, time sensitive and confidential work setting;
- Communicate and interact effectively with supervisors, peers and the public;
- Use computerized equipment to research voter information and print ballots.
In addition, the ideal candidate will be willing and able to follow specific procedures; operate a variety of automated office equipment including a personal computer; and demonstrate some knowledge of modern office methods, practices, and public contact techniques.
PAYROLL TITLES & APPROXIMATE SALARIES: Office Assistant I - $22.00/hour
Office Assistant II - $25.00/hour

The eligible list established from this recruitment will be used to fill current and future Extra Help vacancies.
There are currently one hundred ten (110) anticipated Extra Help vacancies in the County Clerk-Recorder, Elections Division, depending on the operational needs. TENTATIVE SCHEDULE:OPENING DATE: August 25, 2025
CLOSING DATE: Continuous
APPLICATION REVIEW: Applications will begin to be reviewed August 25, and on a frequent basis thereafter.
Examples Of DutiesDuties may include but are not limited to the following:
Vote Center Assistant I - Operates variety of office equipment (desktop/laptop).
- Performs clerical duties, data entry, and voter look-up.
- Issues election ballots and assists voters with casting their ballots.
- Helps resolve public complaints and issues.
- Assists the public in completing forms and explaining rules, regulations, and procedures.
- Assist voters with disabilities, know-how and when to assist voters with specific needs.
- Assists vote center lead.
- Perform other duties as required.
Vote Center Assistant II - Lead and Co-Lead may also (in addition to performing vote center assistant I duties):
- Open and close assigned vote center.
- Set up and coordinate voting site.
- Pick up and deliver voting equipment from Election office to vote center.
- Ensure each ballot is safely transported to the Election’s office.
- Supervise vote center staff and reviews/approve their timecards.
- Train vote center assistant staff.
- Assist with manual tally process.
Typical QualificationsThese are entrance requirements to the examination process and assure neither continuance in the process nor placement on an eligible list.
EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE Vote Center Assistant I No experience required but must demonstrate possession of requisite knowledge, skills and abilities for the position.
Vote Center Assistant II Prior experience working for an elections division during a general election.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS- Incumbents must be able to work flexible hours: that is, overtime, evenings, and weekends with little notice.
- Be willing and able to perform routine and repetitive tasks which may include sitting for long periods of time.
- Must be willing and able to work in the Elections Division Office and vote center locations throughout Ventura County.
DESIRED- Have the ability to possess, obtain, and maintain a valid California driver's license.
- Prior work experience in the Election’s Division
Some knowledge of: principles and theories of professional/technical disciplines may be required depending on the assignment; techniques required for gathering, evaluating, transmitting, or conveying information; interviewing techniques; and record-keeping practices and techniques.
Ability to: collect and evaluate information; reason logically and develop reasonable recommendations; read and understand forms, documents, letters, and technical language; communicate effectively with other employees, clients, the general public, or other agency personnel; follow complex written and oral instructions; utilize community resources; and establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with co-workers, clients and the public
Working Conditions:
Position may involve moderate to heavy public contact depending on assignment.
Physical requirements may include the ability to lift 25 pounds depending on assignment.
