Eastern Municipal Water District is seeking a highly motivated individual to fill a vacancy in our Mechanical Services Department for the position of Machinist . Under general supervision, performs a wide variety of skilled duties in the design, fabrication, installation, maintenance, repair and servicing of mechanical equipment and machinery used in the production, treatment, storage, transmission and distribution of potable and reclaimed water and the collection, transmission and treatment of wastewater; sets-up, operates, and maintains machine shop equipment such as lathes, horizontal and vertical milling machines, surface grinders, and others; and performs related duties as assigned.

They should be highly proficient in precision machining and fabrication, capable of visualizing and producing complex components with minimal direction. The ideal candidate demonstrates initiative and ownership, approaching every task with pride, accuracy, and a strong commitment to quality and safety. Their attention to detail enables them to maintain exacting tolerances and high craftsmanship standards, even under pressure or during emergency repairs.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

This fully qualified journey level classification is responsible for performing skilled duties in the design, fabrication, installation, maintenance, repair and servicing of assigned mechanical equipment and machinery. Positions at this level perform the full range of duties as assigned, working independently, and exercising judgment and initiative. Positions at this level receive only occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise and are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies of the work unit.

This class is distinguished from the Mechanical Maintenance Supervisor in that the latter is a full supervisory level class with accountability and ongoing decision-making responsibilities associated with the work.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED

Receives general supervision from the Mechanical Maintenance Supervisor. Exercises no direct supervision over staff.
