Eastern Municipal Water District is seeking a highly motivated individual to fill a vacancy in our Mechanical Services Department for the position of Machinist . Under general supervision, performs a wide variety of skilled duties in the design, fabrication, installation, maintenance, repair and servicing of mechanical equipment and machinery used in the production, treatment, storage, transmission and distribution of potable and reclaimed water and the collection, transmission and treatment of wastewater; sets-up, operates, and maintains machine shop equipment such as lathes, horizontal and vertical milling machines, surface grinders, and others; and performs related duties as assigned.

  • Range 214: $41.25 - $51.36 Hourly; $7,150.00 - $8,902.40 Monthly

The ideal candidate for the Machinist position should possess advanced technical skills, strong mechanical intuition, and a proactive, solutions-oriented mindset. They should be highly proficient in precision machining and fabrication, capable of visualizing and producing complex components with minimal direction. The ideal candidate demonstrates initiative and ownership, approaching every task with pride, accuracy, and a strong commitment to quality and safety. Their attention to detail enables them to maintain exacting tolerances and high craftsmanship standards, even under pressure or during emergency repairs.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

This fully qualified journey level classification is responsible for performing skilled duties in the design, fabrication, installation, maintenance, repair and servicing of assigned mechanical equipment and machinery. Positions at this level perform the full range of duties as assigned, working independently, and exercising judgment and initiative. Positions at this level receive only occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise and are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies of the work unit.

This class is distinguished from the Mechanical Maintenance Supervisor in that the latter is a full supervisory level class with accountability and ongoing decision-making responsibilities associated with the work.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED

Receives general supervision from the Mechanical Maintenance Supervisor. Exercises no direct supervision over staff.

Required Skills

Knowledge of:

• Principles, methods, techniques, materials, tools and equipment used in the fabrication, installation, maintenance and repair of mechanical equipment and machinery common to a large water works system.
• Machine shop procedures and practices.
• Shop mathematics.
• Skilled use and operation of oxyacetylene, electric arc MIG and TIG welding and metal spray equipment and materials.
• District and mandated safety rules, regulations, and protocols.
• Techniques for providing a high level of customer service by effectively dealing with the public, vendors, contractors, and District staff.
• The structure and content of the English language, including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition, and grammar.
• Modern equipment and communication tools used for business functions and program, project, and task coordination, including computers and software programs relevant to work performed.

Ability to:

• Set-up, operate, and maintain machine shop tools and equipment.
• Diagnose and repair a wide variety of mechanical equipment, systems and machinery, such as valves, motors, pumps and other equipment common to the water works field.
• Use precision and diagnostic instruments to measure required tolerances of mechanical parts.
• Identify and implement effective courses of action to complete assigned work.
• Read, interpret and work from blueprints, plans, specifications and manuals.
• Train others in work processes and procedures.
• Coordinate work assignments with other sections, divisions or departments.
• Understand, interpret, and apply all pertinent laws, codes, regulations, policies and procedures, and standards relevant to work performed.
• Independently organize work, set priorities, meet critical deadlines, and follow-up on assignments.
• Use tact, initiative, prudence, and independent judgment within general policy, procedural, and legal guidelines.
• Effectively use computer systems, software applications relevant to work performed, and modern business equipment to perform a variety of work tasks.
• Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing, using appropriate English grammar and syntax.
• Establish, maintain, and foster positive and effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

Required Experience

Experience:

Any combination of experience and education that provides the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying, along with the specific licenses/certifications as outlined below:

• Four (4) years of progressively responsible experience in machining, fabrication, and welding of industrial equipment used in or equivalent to a large potable and/or wastewater system.

Education:

• Equivalent to completion of the twelfth (12 th ) grade.

Licenses/Certifications:

• A valid California driver's license and the ability to maintain insurability under the District's Vehicle Insurance Policy.

Salary:

$85,800.00 - $106,828.80
