PURPOSE:

Under the general supervision of the Associate Vice President for Public Safety/Chief of Police, the Cadet under close supervision, routinely works an assigned shift and attends a certified academy. The Cadet is provided guidance in preparation for attending the police academy. During the preparation period, cadets may assist with patrol duties under direct supervision of an assigned supervisor on foot, bicycle or by vehicle to protect students, faculty, staff, campus visitors, property, and facilities against accidents, bodily harm, fire, theft, vandalism and illegal entry; provides general information and assistance to the public at California State University, Monterey Bay.

The Cadet is a non-sworn officer in a trainee capacity. Incumbents attend a Peace Officer Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) certified academy to develop the minimum qualifications necessary to assume a position as a sworn police officer. Appointments to this classification are temporary in nature and typically do not exceed more than nine (9) months. Upon successful completion of the police academy, the recruit will be sworn in as a Police Officer of the University Police Department.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include, but are not limited to, the following:

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:

General Understanding of: existing criminal code and various laws; general knowledge of crime prevention and first aid.

Ability to: acquire a working knowledge of public safety including law enforcement methods, traffic control, arrest and safety procedures applicable to a campus environment; quickly learn and apply campus rules and regulations related to work performed; ability to assess law enforcement or other hazardous situations and determine an appropriate course of action; ability to prepare clear and concise reports; ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with the campus community, general public and state and local public safety agencies.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

You must provide your current WSTB and Pellet B scores to be considered.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

A bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year college or university.

Tech skills in the use of computers, understanding of AI, adaptability to utilize various records management systems (RMS).

Familiarization with and knowledge related to the handling and use firearms.

Highly desirable: Demonstrated understanding of and commitment to CSUMB’s Vision Statement.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT & POSITION DESIGNATIONS:

PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT :

Various working environments including indoor, outdoor, inclement weather, and other adverse conditions. Work may include rotating shifts including nights, weekends, and holidays. May be required to work on short notice. May be required to travel. Personal protective equipment required including police uniform, duty belt and weapon.
