The Missouri Department of Agriculture, Grain Inspection and Warehousing Division has a part-time Grain Technician position in the west central Missouri area, near Adrian, MO. Employees in this position are expected to have reliable transportation and communication.

Employees in this position serve a critical front-line role in the foundation of Missouri’s grain market. Employees inspect carriers (such as railcars) prior to loading of grain, obtain grain samples and perform basic technician functions in order to aid in establishing the value of that grain. The work of this position is primarily in the field (at grain loading sites).

Employees in this position are anticipated to work 1-3 days a week through fall harvest, and up to 2 days weekly throughout the rest of the year. Supervisors work with employees on their availability.

Compensation:

• Base rate of $17.55/hr + 1.5x overtime pay
• +$4.00/hr for hours worked outside of normal business hours
• +$5.00/hr for qualifying work on shuttle trains
• Paid twice per month
• Paid on-the-job training

  Flexible scheduling options available; supervisors work with employees based on their availability but full-day (full-train) availability is required
  
  

A “normal day” for employees in this position is that a train is anticipated to arrive at 5:30am. You meet other employees on site at 5am to prepare. The train arrives and starts loading. It may take 10-14 hours depending on the day. Once loading and associated work is complete, your shift is over .

Travel/Mileage

Employees in this position will be expected to utilize their own vehicle, but some mileage will be reimbursed. The employee’s commute from their residence to work sites near Adrian, MO is not reimbursable.

After initial training is completed, a normal day for e mployees in this position would be to drive their own vehicle to work at customer locations in the west central Missouri area, near Adrian, MO, where a crew of other Grain Inspection employees from other areas of the state would join them to work a train together. In this instance, no mileage would be reimbursed for employees in this position.

On occasion, this employee would be responsible for transporting grain samples from the local Adrian-area customers to the office in Raytown, MO, or they may have other assigned duties or training in the Raytown, MO office. Mileage will be reimbursed (when pre-approved) between the main customer work site in Adrian, MO and the office in Raytown, MO.

• Receive on-the-job training in the FGIS grain sampling and technician procedures
• Inspect railcars and containers to ensure they are in proper condition for loading and free from leaks, odors and infestation
• Obtain representative samples of grain
• Observe and verify the weighing of carriers by grain company employees
• Complete work records legibly, accurately, and efficiently
• Maintain vehicles, sampling and lab equipment, and work environments properly
• Establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, grain businesses, others in the grain trade and the general public
• Perform other related work as assigned

Minimum Qualifications:

• Possess a valid Missouri Driver's License
• Possess a high school diploma or GED/equivalent. Work experience may be substituted for deficiency in the required education.
• At least 18 years old

Physical Considerations:

Employees in this position must be able to:

• Regularly work in a grain elevator environment that may include factors such as loud noise, foul air, grain dust, inclement weather, extreme heights and moving machinery
• Occasionally work in enclosed spaces (shipping containers) for short periods to inspect the carrier for damage
• Distinguish subtle differences in color
• Detect subtle changes in odor
• Occasionally work from heights, including the ability to climb stairs and ladders
• Frequently lift a minimum of 15 pounds, and occasionally lift 50 pounds to a height of five feet with reasonable accommodations
• Sit or stand for extended periods (several hours)

Special Requirements

• Adapt to variable work schedules that include nights, weekends and holidays, and that are subject to change with little notice
• Have consistent & reliable means of communication (mobile phone)
• Have consistent & reliable means of transportation, including occasionally in inclement weather
• Ability to obtain USDA/FGIS licenses to sample and process grain within established timeframes
• Employees in this position may be ineligible for hire if they, their spouse, their minor children, or any relative immediately residing in their household is employed by or otherwise receives direct or indirect financial consideration from any grain elevator or warehouse, or engage in the merchandising, storage, commercial transportation, or other commercial handling of grain. If applicable, this relationship must be disclosed prior to hire.

Lack of post-secondary education will not be used as the sole basis denying consideration to any applicant.

This position cannot exceed 1000 hours annually.

THIS IS A PART-TIME NON-BENEFITTED POSITION

Other Details:

The Adrian, MO territory is temporarily overseen by the Marshall, MO field office, but this position will ultimately be supervised by the St. Joseph, MO field office.
