ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Houston Public Library (HPL) is seeking an energetic, flexible, team-oriented person with a passion for customer service to work as a Librarian II at Central Library. The Librarian II will be responsible for providing leadership to the Central team, including supervising volunteers and interns, and coordinating outreach initiatives. Successful candidates will communicate effectively, provide exceptional customer service, be at ease multitasking in a fast-paced public service setting and enjoy interacting with people of all ages from diverse backgrounds.

https://houstonlibrary.org/all-location The Librarian II (Central Library) duties will include:- Coordinates and participates in outreach activities for all ages, promoting the vision, mission, and goals of the library
- Liaising with the community through outreach and developing partnerships with local community organizations.
- Leading and supervising assigned staff including providing timely and objective feedback of performance and fostering the learning and development of staff.
- Providing and modeling exceptional public service and making the library a welcoming space for all.
- Participating in library programs and services for all ages.
- Taking initiative to creatively solve problems and possessing sound decision-making skills.
- Having a strong working knowledge of Microsoft software, electronic devices, and other technologies.
- Interacting with customers at the customer service desk to find information and library materials.
- Performing collection development and maintenance.
- Serving as the person in charge for the location or grouping in the absence of the manager.
- Requires evenings and weekends (Saturday and Sundays) 8am-8:15pm shift work on a rotating basis.
- Other duties as assigned.
WORKING CONDITIONS:The position occasionally requires stooping or bending. Occasional very light lifting, such as three or four reams of papers or books (up to 20 pounds or an equivalent weight) may be required. There are no major sources of discomfort, i.e., essentially normal office environment with acceptable lighting, temperature and air conditions. Requires the ability to make coordinated gross motor movements in response to changing external stimuli within moderately demanding tolerances; or the ability to make coordinated eye/hand movements on a patterned response space within low tolerance demands with no real speed requirements.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS EDUCATIONAL and EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS: Requires a Master’s of Library Science degree from a school accredited by American Library Association (ALA) and one year of library experience.
OR Requires a Bachelor’s degree plus 18 hours toward a Master’s of Library Science degree from a school accredited by ALA and two years of library experience.
A Master’s of Library Science degree must be completed within two years from being hired into this classification.PREFERENCES- Experience working with community partners and outreach.
- Experience in personnel management and supervision.
- Ability to plan and organize work and skilled at prioritization.
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to collaborate with others.
- Experience working with people of diverse backgrounds.
- Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
- Ability to motivate, develop, train, and direct staff in a collaborative team environment.
- Knowledge of current versions of MS Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, OneDrive and Outlook), Sirsi Symphony.
- Bilingual skills (Spanish/English) preferred.
