Ceramics Technician (Part-Time)
Description
JOB SUMMARYUnder general supervision, operate and maintain ceramics laboratory, kiln and materials; demonstrate proper use and technique for the ceramic arts program; work with participants in the ceramics art program and; perform related work as required.
ESSENTIAL DUTIESThe duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment to the class :
- Plan, promote, and conduct a variety of recreation and cultural activities.
- Prepare and maintain accurate written reports and records.
- Load and fire gas, electric, and Raku kilns.
- Operate specialized equipment such as pug mills, clay mixers, clay extruders, pottery wheels, etc.
- Operate power tools such as saws, drills, grinders, mixers, etc.
- Perform maintenance and minor repairs on specialized tools and equipment, including kilns, wheels, pug mill, etc.
- Work with hazardous chemicals and materials in a safe manner.
- Mandate and maintain safe studio practices, including maintenance of the MSDS and Proposition 65 protocols.
- Calculate, prepare, and mix complex formulae.
- Demonstrate advanced knowledge of wheel-throwing, hand-building, slip casting, glazing and firing techniques.
- Maintain department equipment and supplies.
- Schedule and monitor equipment use.
- Act as cashier or locker room facilities attendant.
- Organize and assist with furniture arrangements and set-ups.
- Handle student work, hazardous chemicals, and fragile and sensitive items with care and attention to detail.
- Assist in facility maintenance, including clean-up and janitorial services.
- Provide leadership to assigned staff and volunteers.
- Conduct visual inspections.
- Display courteous and professional behavior toward the public and staff.
- Observe all safety and City rules and regulations.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION GUIDELINES Training and Experience: Two years of experience working and training in a ceramics studio is required. Bachelor’s degree with a concentration in ceramics preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Requires knowledge of recreation programs and activities, facilities, equipment safety and use, and program planning; skill in operating specific department tools and equipment; knowledge of and adherence to safety protocols and best practices; effective communication skills, both verbal and written; and the ability to plan, organize, and implement recreation events; work effectively with senior citizens and children; prepare written reports; conduct recreation program activities; provide staff leadership; follow oral and written instructions; and work effectively with others.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTSMay be required to work shifts, weekends, or holidays.

Part-time employees are enrolled in PARS (Public Alternate Retirement System). All part-time and seasonal employees contribute 7.5% each pay period on a pre-tax basis. If an employee reaches 1,000 hours within a fiscal year (July 1st to June 30th) or is already a CalPERS member, then they are enrolled in CalPERS (Public Employees Retirement System).
The City complies with California Labor Code 245-249 by providing paid sick leave for part-time hourly employees accordingly.
The City of Manhattan Beach does not provide medical/dental/vision benefits to part-time employees. Eligible employees enrolled in CalPERS may opt into a CalPERS medical plan.

$19.39 - $23.57 Hourly
