GENERAL DESCRIPTION: Under the direction of the State Parks Fire Program Manager, this internship is an opportunity designed for students to obtain relevant work experience to be competitive for future positions in natural resource management and stewardship. Duties may include: assess fuel load and vegetation characteristics for prescribed fire planning. Assist with habitat restoration projects to include vegetation management such as hand and mechanical thinning and herbicide application. Collect GPS data for threatened and rare species; vegetation plots; trails; and other features to be used in prescribed fire planning, implementation, and habitat restoration. Intern may also assist with fire management plans, baseline flora/fauna inventories, and fire equipment maintenance/repair. Ensures compliance with State and Federal laws and regulations, and agency policies and procedures. Performs additional duties as assigned. Complies with all Agency, Division, and Branch rules, regulations, and procedures.
Work with State Park Fire Program staff to assess fuel load and vegetation characteristics for prescribed fire planning. Create management unit boundaries and determine adequate pre-fire actions. Collect GPS data for threatened and rare species; vegetation plots; trails; and other features. Collected GPS data will then be imported into GIS for use in prescribed fire planning and implementation. Interns may also assist with prescribed fires, baseline wildlife inventories, or other duties as assigned.
Intern will become familiar with GPS data collection and processing; vegetation monitoring techniques; fuel load assessment techniques; fire management planning; and other common techniques utilized by natural resource managers.

Qualifications: MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Education : Current enrollment as an undergraduate or graduate student in an accredited college or university or recent graduate with a bachelor's degree or higher within the last 6 months.
Minimum of 18 completed semester credit hours from an accredited college or university at time of application.
Must have an overall grade point average (GPA) of 2.5 or higher on a 4.0 grade point scale or "Pass" on a Pass/Fail system.
Experience : None required.
Licensure : Must possess a valid state driver's license.

May required to travel 30% of the time with possible overnight stays.
Required to perform manual labor, including lifting supplies and materials up to 25 lbs.
