Job Summary/Objective:Albemarle County’s mission is to enhance the well‑being and quality of life for all community members. Operation of the County’s street sweeper, “Sweeping Beauty,” supports this mission by removing dirt, litter, and pollution from roadways to improve appearance and prevent debris from entering local waterways.
This position is responsible for the operation, daily maintenance, and general repair of the street sweeper. During non‑sweeping periods, the operator assists Facilities Maintenance with general building and grounds tasks. Daily work is performed independently under the supervision of the Roadway Maintenance Coordinator. The position is designated essential personnel, requiring response during emergencies or weather‑related situations.
The role provides predictable early‑morning hours, well‑maintained equipment, and a supportive team environment, making it well‑suited for candidates who enjoy independent work with a clear daily purpose.
Supervisory Responsibilities:Essential Functions:- Operates street sweeper to keep streets and gutters free from trash and debris.
- Perform daily pre-trip and post trip inspections of assigned vehicle. Completion of time, mileage sheets and logbooks
- Follows all County and State safety and traffic laws.
- Inspects, cleans, and performs minor routine maintenance work on street sweeper and related equipment; identifies and reports major problems requiring additional repair.
- During non-sweeping periods, assist facilities maintenance and grounds staff with general building and equipment maintenance, heavy vehicle operation, grounds maintenance, and emergency work as required,
- As an essential employee, will assist regular Facilities and Grounds maintenance staff during inclement weather with related duties as assigned, which may include snow/ice and tree removal.
- Use professional customer service skills, establish, and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, management.
- Works independently in this highly visible role and demonstrates reliability and sound judgment.
Competency: Knowledge/ Skills/Abilities: - Thorough knowledge of general vehicle operation, traffic laws and rules involved in vehicle and equipment operation
- Some knowledge of safety precautions applicable to heavy equipment operation
- Ability to understand and follow oral and written instruction
- Ability to use common hand tools
- Ability to use common hand tools andoperatesimple machinery and equipment.
- Ability to use a personal computer, cell phone, and tablet.
- RequiredEducation and Experience:
- Any combination of education and experience equivalent to completion of high school or GED equivalent and three years’ experience in the operation of heavy motorized equipment and semi-skilled in maintenance or construction work.
- Employees mustpossessa valid driver’s license and meet the qualifications of the County’s driver eligibility program. Occasional travel between County facilities or to off-site meetings may berequired.
Preferred Qualifications/Certifications: Physical and Mental Requirements: - Work frequently requires strenuous physical tasks, including bending, stooping, lifting, and carrying items weighing 20 to 50 pounds, with occasional lifting of items weighing over 100 pounds.
- Work environment routinely exposes employee to potential injuries, adverse weather with occasional exposure to hazardous substances.
- Regular contact with office personnel, other staff members.
- During the sweeping season, normal working hours areapproximately 3:30AMto11:30AM, with hours during inclement weather and off season being 7:30AM to 4:30PM.
Remote Work:This role is designated as not eligible for remote work in accordance with organizational policy and operational requirements. On-site presence is required. All County staff must maintain residence within the Commonwealth of Virginia.
THE SALARY RANGEThe hiring range for this position is $25.73 - $28.43 per hour (approx. $53,512 - $59,144 per year.) Starting offer is based on applicable education beyond minimum requirements and internal equity. The position also provides excellent benefits including 12 paid holidays, paid vacation and sick leave, health insurance options with employer contribution, employer-paid life insurance, VRS retirement, and continuing education/training opportunities. This is a full time, FLSA non-exempt position. Internal candidates will receive pay adjustments in accordance with Local Government Personnel Policy, §P-60.
