Under general direction, Transit Supervisor I supervises the day to day assignments and performance of Bus Driver's on an assigned shift. Incumbents monitor route service, investigate, and resolve customer complaints and assign and supervise the daily assignments of buses, bus drivers and other assigned staff in accordance with applicable local, state, and federal statutes, rules, and regulations.
Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Supervise daily bus and driver assignments.
- Monitor routes and restore service during delays.
- Investigate service issues, violations, and accidents.
- Resolve customer complaints and minor grievances.
- Prepare reports and operational documentation.
- Evaluate driver performance and recommend actions.
- Respond to field incidents requiring intervention.
- Identify service problems and suggest improvements.
- Perform training, ride-alongs, radio control, or paratransit oversight as assigned.
- Perform related duties as assigned.

The current vacancies exist in the Department of Transportation. Immediate and future vacancies will be filled from this eligible list for a period of three (3) months from the date the eligible list is created, with the option of extending that period for up to a maximum of two years at the City's discretion. If the examination process is suspended for this recruitment, the eligible list may be limited to three (3) months.
The Requirements Applicants must meet the minimum qualifications on or before the posted filing deadline in order to qualify for the examination and do not assure placement on the eligible list.
Graduation from an accredited college or university with an Associate's Degree in transportation, public or business administration or a closely related field;
AND
Three (3) years of experience in transit operations.
Additional qualifying experience may be substituted for the required education of a year for year basis.
Additional Requirements Possession of a valid Class 'C' California Driver's License or equivalent, required at time of appointment. Candidates considered for hire may be required to provide proof of a valid driver's license and current copy of their driving record.
Must be able to obtain a Class 'B' California Driver's License with Passenger endorsement prior to the end of the probationary period and maintain throughout assignment.
The selected eligible candidates certified will be required to successfully pass a Department interview and a Department of Justice fingerprint prior to employment with the City of Fresno.
This position is designated as being Safety Sensitive and requires all eligibles offered employment to successfully pass a drug test prior to employment. Federal law requires that applicants for positions involving the operation of certain transit vehicles, revenue services vehicles, the transportation of hazardous materials or heavy equipment over 26,001 pounds requiring a commercial driver's license, must undergo pre-employment drug testing as a condition of employment and may be subject to random alcohol and drug testing throughout their employment in this position.
The Selection Process The examination process may consist of the following:
APPLICATION REVIEW - Qualifying Only: Applications submitted will be reviewed and a limited number of the most qualified candidates may be invited to the Oral Examination. The selection will be based upon those applications which demonstrate the greatest breadth and depth of applicable education, experience, skills and training. Therefore, applicants are urged to submit sufficiently detailed information in their application materials for a proper evaluation.
ORAL EXAM - 100% : A panel of subject matter experts will conduct a job-related oral examination to evaluate a candidate's knowledge of safe bus operating practices, ability to coach and train drivers in correct operating and safe driving practices, maintain records and prepare clear and concise reports, establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work or other topics related to a candidate's training, experience and qualifications for the position of Transit Supervisor I.
Candidates must achieve a passing score to qualify for the eligible list.
The Oral Exam date is tentatively scheduled for the week of September 7th, 2026.

80 hours lifetime maximum.
MANAGEMENT LEAVE 60 hours per fiscal year with cash out provisions, for exempt employees only.
HOLIDAYS 10 City-observed annual holidays, plus birthday and 2 personal days.
LONG TERM DISABILITY Benefit equal to 66.66% of monthly salary up to $7,500 per month after 30 days of disability; premium paid by the City.
BUS PASSES Provided to Supervisors in FAX Operations.
BILINGUAL PREMIUM $100 per month upon approved certification
HEALTH REIMBURSEMENT ARRANGEMENT (HRA) Eligible retirees can use the remaining Sick Leave balance, in excess of 240 hours, at 80% of hourly rate and other qualified leave balances, tax free, to reimburse health insurance premiums and other qualified medical expenses.
RETIREMENT - City of Fresno Retirement Systems, one of the best funded public systems in the state. Reciprocity with other public California systems. Vested in Retirement benefits after 5 years of service. City employees do not participate in Social Security.
DROP (Deferred Retirement Option Program): an optional, voluntary program that allows an employee to deposit retirement benefits in a special savings account within the Retirement System while continuing to work for the City of Fresno for up to 10 years. Participation minimum is age 50 and vested. Benefits include ownership of accumulated funds, compound interest earnings, and alternative distribution options.
